Training Excavation 2008 Week 1: 21st July - 25th July 2008

Another year, another trench, well actually three! We have opened two entirely new areas and extended the large Trench 3000 (with the double ditched round house feature from last year). This means we have an awful lot of work to do over the next few weeks! (See below for the locations).

Trenches open in Blacklands

Trench 4000 is located over the outer ditch of the enclosure of the site and Trench 1600 crosses the trapezoid enclosure and the large roundhouse located within it. The plan above shows these two new trenches and previous excavations. The extension to 3000 is to the east and we hope to be able to uncover the entrance to a roundhouse that was partially excavated in 2007 in this area.

Work started in earnest on Monday with a new batch of trainees. Much of the work entailed cleaning areas, but also some feature digging could be undertaken in the 3000 extension. The double trenches of the ring ditches surrounding the probable roundhouse can be seen under excavation (below). These were sealed by a mettled track which can be seen behind the diggers. The stone surface to the right of the person in the red shirt appears to be the inner floor of the roundhouse.

The large trench over the outer ditch was started after the trench had been exposed by machine. The large ditch can be seen cutting through naturally outcropping stone becoming visible in the left hand corner of the trench.

Similar cleaning and exposing of features was begun in Trench 1600. The top part of this trench was photographed using our vertical photographic technique by the end of the week (below).

The ditch of the trapezoid enclosure can be seen as a dark smudgy area towards the top of the picture. A very dark circular feature can be seen near the edge of the trench before it widens out, this needed to be carefully excavated as it may contain burnt material. The stony area on the edge of the trench was a ditch running into a large pit that was excavated in 2006.
