Training Excavation 2008 Week 3: 4th - 8th August 2008
Despite heavy rain at the beginning of this week good progress on all the areas is being made. All the trenches have now been photographed and the detailed planning is well underway enabling the digging of the features. During the weekend a small burial was recovered from the trench located over the roundhouse in the trapezoid enclosure. This appears to be the remains of a baby of about 6 months. The wet conditions made the recording of the remains in the ground very difficult and they were lifted as quickly as possible before they could deteriorate any further. The pictures below show the skeleton as it was found and then the total remains laid out as they were sorted and identified.
Much of the skeleton had survived, but it was in a very delicate condition. It is unclear whether this burial took place during the occupation of the roundhouse or after as it was found just below the plough soil. The features in trench 1600 (see week 1 for locations of the trenches) are beginning to show more clearly as more of the plough soil is removed. The deeper topsoil in this trench has meant that there is likely to be better preservation of features, particularly within the roundhouse. The ditches of the trapezoid enclosure are very clear, as they show as dark features within a generally brown background area (see below).
Work in trench 3000 has also continued with the plans well underway and the whole of the area cleaned for photographs. The entrance of the roundhouse in this area is becoming much clearer and internal structures are beginning to show. The remnants of a mettled surface within the walls of the house can be seen and possible beam slots for the walls are now being traced (the picture below shows the planning and cleaning in progress)
The long trench 4000 to the east of 3000 has now been fully planned and photograph so work has started on a number of sections of the wide ditch running the entire length of this trench (see below).
With all this digging some effort has to be made to try and keep up with the processing of the vast quantities of finds from the excavation. The work on the finds goes on all the time with volunteers helping with the washing, marking and cataloguing (below).
