Training Excavation 2008 Week 5: 18th - 22nd August 2008
As we approach the final weeks of the training excavation we find ourselves looking at more complex archaeology. The dating evidence being recovered from a number of features in all the trenches suggests a very long period of occupation. We are now finding more evidence of settlement dating to the Bronze Age. The areas under excavation (marked in red on the plan below) show complex sequences of the use of the enclosures in this field.
In Trench 1600 the features within the roundhouse have become much clearer with the gully being clearly detected and a number of postholes within the line of the gully, probably indicating the structure of the walls. We have also found evidence of internal divisions within the building (below).
The curvi-linear ditch to the south of the roundhouse in this trench appears to be earlier than the roundhouse gully and there is increasing evidence that the roundhouse may pre-date the trapezoid enclosure, but more work is needed to clarify this. The gullies are very confusing as can be seen in the photo below as the digger is trying to work out what cuts what!
The students have also had a trial at resistance meter profiling. This method of geophysical survey allows segments of resistance data to be seen as slices. This is still very experimental, but may help in areas where we have blocks of high resistance that may be masking other activities (below). The readings are taken along the line of the grid at regular intervals to give a section of readings rather that the plan view.
